The official launch of an exciting new Monthly Celebration has arrived, Honored Veteran of the Month: May 2025. This initiative aims to recognize and honor the adventures and sacrifices made by our veterans, showcasing their remarkable stories and contributions to our nation. I am truly privileged to write about Senior Chief Petty Officer James Gazaway, a distinguished individual whose life and service exemplify the very essence of dedication and patriotism.
My introduction to James Gazaway came through his daughter, Paige Gazaway, a vibrant and enthusiastic employee at a popular BBQ restaurant in the Livingston Square. During our conversation, she was eager to share not only old photographs that capture precious moments of her 90-year-old father’s life but also to recount heartfelt tales of his service and the profound impact he has had on her life and the lives of many others who have had the honor of knowing him.
Paige spoke with immense pride about her father's journey, detailing how he enlisted in the Navy at a young age, driven by a desire to serve his country and protect the freedoms that we often take for granted. She described the rigorous training he underwent and the various roles he fulfilled throughout his illustrious career, including his time spent aboard naval vessels and his participation in numerous missions that were top secret and critical to national security, all over the world. Each story she shared painted a vivid picture of a man who not only served with honor but also inspired those around him with his unwavering commitment and true resilience.

The photographs and stories she shared were more than snapshots and tiny adventures; they were windows into a life of military service, camaraderie, and sacrifice. From early days in uniform to moments with fellow service members, each story captured the essence of military life and bonds formed in adversity. Paige's enthusiasm and respect for her father's legacy were clear, showing that her father, James Gazaway is a true hero to his family and community, and I want to truly thank you for sharing.
Today, James Gazaway, is now 90 years old, and his beloved wife Pat enjoy a serene and peaceful life on their picturesque farm nestled in the countryside of Allons, Tennessee. The couple has made this beautiful piece of land their home since the early 1980s, a time when they first decided to embrace the rural lifestyle. Over the decades, they have cultivated not only the land but also a deep sense of community and belonging in this charming area. Together, they have created a warm and inviting home that radiates love and hospitality to all their friends and family.
As they enjoy their golden years, James and Pat remain grateful for the life they have built together, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the love of family and friends. Their story is one of resilience, dedication, and the simple joys that come from living in harmony with the land and each other.
A Life Dedicated to Service
About James Gazaway
VFW Post 5062: May 2025- Honored Veteran of the Month
James Gazaway's journey began in a world facing unprecedented challenges and fought his way to the top. As a proud member of the U.S. Navy, he committed two decades of his life to serve and protect his country. His military service included many duty stations, such as San Diego, Korea, and Japan. Each location contributed to his growth as both a sailor and a leader.

During his service on the USS Saratoga from 1967 to 1970, Gazaway even experienced the sheer power of nature firsthand. A severe hurricane struck the carrier, generating waves that surged over the flight deck and winds so fierce they ripped plane elevators from their hinges. He shared many stories with me about his time on the ship and more. These challenges really tested the crew and underscored the resilience needed in military life and true survival skills.
Beyond his remarkable service, Gazaway committed himself to mentorship and teaching. As the Assistant Recruit Commander for the Class of '72 in San Diego, he dedicated most of his time in shaping the next generation of sailors. He successfully guided hundreds of recruits, instilling in them the values of discipline, teamwork, and the importance of service above self.
A Voyage Across the Globe
James Gazaway's military career allowed him to travel extensively, marking his presence in 38 countries and 49 states across the U.S. This global journey enabled him to build relationships that added depth to his life narrative. From the colorful cultures of Eastern and Western Europe to the rich heritage of Asia Minor and Africa, each location enriched his understanding of the world.

Additionally, Gazaway navigated through the complexities of both the Vietnam and Chinese seas. His operational skills and unwavering courage were evident as he faced various challenges, reinforcing his commitment to liberty and freedom.
Recognition and Achievement
Throughout his career, Gazaway received numerous accolades for his exceptional service. In 1955, he earned the Korean Bronze Star Service Medal for dedication during his second tour of duty. He was also awarded four Bronze, one Silver Good Conduct Stars and more, indicating his high standards of military conduct.
His achievements extended beyond traditional military roles. Gazaway played a crucial part in teaching aviation to pilots transitioning from propeller-driven to jet-engine planes. This role not only demonstrated his technical expertise but also his dedication to preparing service members for their missions.
In Pensacola, Florida, he further solidified his legacy by teaching survival and resistance strategies. His efforts equipped countless future veterans with crucial tools to endure the challenges of military life, cementing his commitment to both service and education.
Technical Mastery and Marksman Achievement
James Gazaway’s service included critical involvement in aircraft maintenance and operations, ensuring the functionality of portable A/C units that cooled early jet computers. His attention to detail showcased both his technical skills and unwavering dedication to supporting aviation operations.

On top of his technical expertise, Gazaway was an accomplished marksman. He qualified as a "Marksman" in 1970 and earned the “Expert” designation in 1971. His active participation in competition shooting from 1970 to 1972 underscored his discipline and commitment to excellence.
A Family Legacy
Throughout his military career, Gazaway always prioritized family. It was at NAS Memphis that he met and married Patricia Gazaway, a devoted civil servant. Their bond of over 58 years not only represents love and companionship but also highlights a marriage and partnership rooted in service.
James's legacy is reflected not only in his military achievements but also in the values he instilled in his family and six children. His dedication to both the Navy, and his family showcases the balance between military life and personal connections.
